Show 111: Silverlight Redemption
What’s new This Week in Silverlight
- The crew talks about the Firestarter. It’s coming up, and there we’re going to learn about Silverlight v.Next.
- If you’re in Porland, you can catch a ride to the Firestarter on a wifi equipped bus.
- Novell was just purchased? What does this mean for Mono, MonoTouch and Monodroid?
- Wallace McClure bet big on Monotouch. He bet on it when the App Store story wasn’t clear (would Steve Jobs let those apps into the AppStore?…). If this deal kills Monotouch, that would *hugely* suck (for him and everyone else). (btw, Wally would like to mention Chris Hardy, Craig Dunn, Bob Elliott and Jim Minatel for their help on the book).
- Kelly gives his thoughts on the LG phone and Windows Phone 7.
- iOS 4.2 released today!!
- Revenues from Windows Phone 7 won’t be known until next year.
- Listen for Balmer to announce something about developer revenues at CES. If he doesn’t…

PDC was a disappointment for you? Come on! The Azure announcements alone was worth it. The next version of Azure (due to launch soon) is sooooo much better and super hot. What was missing for you?
Interesting stuff. Yeah, we’re trying to figure out what the Attachmate/Novell deal means for us all.
As for our MonoTouch book, there are thanks that can be thrown out to several people. First, Chris Hardy and Craig Dunn. They did a great job on writing and picking up my slack. I had a lot of things going on. Secondly, Bob Elliott and Jim Minatel at Wrox/Wiley decided to keep going. Without these four people, all of my initial work would have meant absolutely zero. I really appreciate what these folks did.
Lastly, thanks for the kind words and mention. I’m not sure that I deserve it. I can be really cranky and whiny.
Wally
Also, I should have added that our book wouldn’t be possible without the hard work of the guys at Novell working on all MonoTouch/MonoDroid/MonoX “stuff.”
Wally
@Wally
Thanks for the info. We’re hoping for all the best. The Monotouch investment (with the book, etc.) was really gutsy. The Apple Section 3.3.1 scared us big. That’s a primary reason why we’re doing objective c and sometimes I regret it.

@Andrew
I have a terrible sarcasm filter. That doesn’t sound sarcastic, but I can’t tell for sure…
